McGregor Suffers Knee Injury in TKO Loss to Holloway at UFC 329
Conor McGregor’s highly anticipated return to the octagon ended abruptly Saturday night at UFC 329 in Las Vegas, as a suspected knee injury forced a technical knockout loss against Max Holloway just 69 seconds into the opening round.
The main event at T-Mobile Arena, which marked McGregor’s first UFC appearance in five years, came to a sudden halt after the 37-year-old attempted a leaping roundhouse kick moments after the opening bell. Upon landing, McGregor appeared to injure his right leg. He struggled to maintain his footing, collapsing to the canvas three times while attempting to engage Holloway before referee Mike Beltran waved off the contest at the 1:09 mark.

Medical Assessment and UFC Response
UFC President Dana White addressed the anticlimactic finish during the post-fight press conference, confirming that medical staff suspect a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).
“We’re assuming a blown ACL,” White told reporters. “That’s what I assumed when I saw it, and that’s what the doctors think, too.”
White dismissed speculation that McGregor entered the bout already injured. He noted that the fighter had passed medical evaluations during the lead-up to the event, including the weigh-ins and a high-profile press conference that generated over 44 million views. Regarding McGregor’s future, White remained noncommittal, noting that the fighter has not yet spoken publicly about his intentions. “There’s a lot of unanswered questions right now,” White said.
A Difficult Road for the Former Champion
The injury continues a challenging period for the former featherweight and lightweight champion. McGregor had been sidelined from the UFC since July 2021, when he suffered a fractured left leg during a fight against Dustin Poirier. His return path was further complicated by a canceled bout against Michael Chandler in 2024 due to a broken toe, as well as an 18-month suspension for “whereabouts failures” related to anti-doping protocols, which expired in March 2026.
With Saturday’s result, McGregor’s record falls to 22-7. He has secured only one victory since 2016, and his last two appearances have both ended in first-round injury-related stoppages. The loss also resulted in a significant financial hit for high-profile bettors, including the rapper Drake, who confirmed he had placed a $1 million wager on a McGregor victory.
Holloway Open to Rematch
Despite the abrupt nature of the fight, Max Holloway (28-9) expressed interest in a third meeting with the Irishman once he has recovered. The two previously met in 2013, with McGregor winning by unanimous decision.
“You guys are lucky because there is going to be a Holloway v McGregor 3 now,” Holloway said after the fight. “We’ve got to run it back one more time. One more time for the boys.”

UFC 329 Undercard Highlights
