RIGA – The crisis in the Middle East requires a joint response from transatlantic and European partners, Latvia’s National Security Council concluded Wednesday. The council also addressed the ongoing situation in Ukraine and the need for continued support while strengthening drone and anti-drone capabilities.
Middle East Crisis Requires Joint Effort
The National Security Council meeting, chaired by President Edgars Rinkevics, recognized the direct impact of developments in the Middle East on global security and the peace process in Ukraine. The council stressed the importance of collaboration with transatlantic and European partners to find solutions to the current crisis, while maintaining support for Ukraine.
Strengthening Drone and Anti-Drone Defenses
The council reviewed progress in interinstitutional coordination and the legal framework for implementing drone and anti-drone solutions. Reports were heard from the defense minister, commander of the National Armed Forces, minister of the interior, chief of the State Police, transport minister, and director of the Civil Aviation Agency.
The rapid development and widespread use of unmanned systems, particularly lessons learned from the war in Ukraine, necessitate strengthening unmanned systems, anti-drone, and electronic warfare capabilities, the council agreed. Effective civil-military coordination is also crucial, with each institution clearly defining its responsibilities and action algorithms.
Improvements to UAV Regulations
Since the drone incident at Riga Airport in January 2025, which revealed significant shortcomings, the legal framework on UAV flight regulations has been improved. The right of the State Police to use special means to counter the illegal use of UAVs for the security of protected objects or critical infrastructure has also been extended. The council acknowledged the need for further development of both the legal framework and implementation of countermeasures.
The National Security Council also received reports from national security authorities.
