Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal Future Uncertain After Leaving Camp

Cristiano Ronaldo’s international future is in deep uncertainty after the 41-year-old forward abruptly walked out of Portugal’s training camp in Copenhagen following an apparent rift with head coach Jorge Jesus.

Ronaldo Leaves Camp as Leão Takes No. 7 Jersey

The timing of the walkout sent immediate shockwaves through the Portuguese squad and international football. Ronaldo left Parken Stadium shortly after Jesus finished addressing reporters ahead of the fixture against Denmark. The team’s training session subsequently proceeded without him.

With Ronaldo leaving the camp, Rafael Leão was assigned the famous No. 7 jersey. Meanwhile, Portugal pressed on with the fixture, securing a 4-2 victory over Denmark.

The episode divided public opinion across the nation. Outlets like O Jogo splashed front-page headlines declaring, CR7 turns his back on the national team, while JM in Madeira asked, Is this the end? and A Bola labeled it A sad farewell. Conversely, certain media outlets where Ronaldo holds shareholder ties directed their criticism toward Jesus, accusing the manager of ingratitude. Amid the turmoil, Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro reportedly intervened by holding individual conversations with Ronaldo, Jesus, and FPF president Pedro Proença.

Conflicting Accounts of the Jesus-Ronaldo Friction

The friction between the player and coach stems from a breakdown in communication regarding playing time. Jesus, who previously coached Ronaldo at Al-Nassr where they won the Saudi Arabian league title together, took over the national team post following Roberto Martínez’s departure after the round-of-16 exit at the World Cup. Speaking to reporters, Jesus revealed that he had a verbal agreement with Ronaldo that the forward would not start against Norway on Sunday—following a 67-minute appearance against Wales but would make an appearance off the bench. Due to tactical circumstances during the 2-1 win over Norway, Ronaldo remained an unused substitute.

Jesus admitted that sending Ronaldo to warm up extensively without using him was a mistake that would upset any player. However, the manager maintained absolute authority during Wednesday’s press conference, declaring, It won’t be Cristiano, or any other player, who changes my ideas as a coach. Jesus also stated, I can promise whatever I want, adding for emphasis, Zero.

Prior to the walkout, Jesus had defended his relationship with the player, stating, Cris will never be a problem for the national team or for me. He later denied any active feud, noting that Ronaldo told him, I’m here for you to decide. If you want me to play, I’ll play. If you want me to go to the stands, I’ll go.

Ronaldo Announces Departure from National Team Training Camp

Ronaldo addressed his departure via an Instagram statement, writing: Following the national team manager’s press conference, and after a conversation with the President of the Portuguese Football Federation, I have decided to leave the national team’s training camp. He added, In due course, I will tell all Portuguese people the truth about the reasons behind my departure from the national team, to which I have always been fully committed. Now is the time to wish Portugal and all my team-mates, without exception, the best of luck.

Spanish outlet Marca reported that Ronaldo boarded a private flight to Madrid, his long-time home during his Real Madrid tenure. It remains officially unclear whether the federation will deem Ronaldo’s departure justified.

With 146 goals across a record 234 appearances for Portugal, Ronaldo had already confirmed that this year’s tournament marked his final World Cup appearance, though he previously expressed intentions to continue playing to reach the milestone of 1,000 career goals—currently standing at 979. Al-Nassr’s next club fixture is scheduled for October 9, as questions persist regarding whether the nation’s all-time leading scorer will ever return to international competition.
