Croatia’s rugged shoreline and unspoiled landscapes continue to draw visitors, offering a refreshing authenticity for those seeking a relaxed and un-staged travel experience. One traveler shared four of their favorite places in the country, ranging from filming locations for “Game of Thrones” to hidden gems with unique natural features.
“Game of Thrones” fans should take a day trip to Lokrum Island to see a replica of the Iron Throne
Fans of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” can visit Lokrum Island, which served as the city of Qarth in the series, and sit on a replica of the Iron Throne. The island is a short 15-minute ferry ride from Dubrovnik and features the gardens of a Benedictine monastery.
Beyond the “Game of Thrones” connection, Lokrum Island offers a salt lake (Mrtvo More) for floating, secluded beaches for relaxation, and free-roaming peacocks for unique photo opportunities.
Relax on a quiet beach along Rab’s seaside promenade
While Lopar is known for its sandy beaches, a quieter experience can be found along the seaside promenade between the towns of Palit and Rab. This area provides opportunities for morning jogs, breakfast with a view, and refreshing swims.
The pathway is dotted with small beaches shaded by pine trees, offering a relaxing atmosphere accompanied by the sound of cicadas.
Rastoke looks like a fairy tale brought to life
Located about 30 minutes from Plitvice Lakes National Park, Rastoke is a quaint village featuring over 20 waterfalls along the Slunjčica River, original mills, a fairy garden, and an eco museum.
Visitors can explore a fairy garden with hidden sculptures and walk along a boardwalk to view the waterfalls.
Imotski is one of the best hidden gems in Croatia
The town of Imotski is perched above Modro Jezero (Blue Lake), located in a sinkhole. A visit to the Blue Lake Viewpoint is recommended, where swimming is possible when water levels are high.
The town also offers the Topana Fortress, located at its highest point, and nearby Crveno Jezero (Red Lake), another sinkhole with scenic views. Tradition holds that when Blue Lake dries up, it becomes the stage for a soccer game between the teams Vilenjaci (Elves) and Vukodlaci (Werewolves).
The traveler expressed a desire to return to Croatia, anticipating further discoveries.
