As the new year approaches, one Dartmouth College student reflects on a shifting perspective regarding resolutions and the bittersweet anticipation of post-graduate life.
Initial Resolutions and a Changing Focus
The author initially approached the tradition of New Year’s resolutions with cynicism, but found motivation in the prospect of graduating in June 2026 and the subsequent life changes – a move to New York City, a new job, and training for a marathon. An initial list of “ins and outs” focused on these future endeavors, but later evolved to center on appreciating the remaining time at Dartmouth.
Revised 2026 “Ins”
- Studying in Sanborn Library, prioritizing the building’s atmosphere over the lighting in other campus study spaces.
- Eating at least one meal per day with friends, recognizing the importance of connection amidst busy schedules.
- Outdoor runs, beginning training for a marathon in the Upper Valley’s winter landscape.
Revised 2026 “Outs”
- Talking at full volume in the East Reading Room, acknowledging the need to respect the space’s quiet atmosphere.
- Eating Novack Cafe’s shrimp spring rolls, due to their unpleasant texture and resulting stomach discomfort.
- Complaining about being old and tired, recognizing the importance of embracing the present moment at age 21.
- Dwelling on past regrets regarding the Dartmouth experience, choosing instead to focus on enjoying the remaining time.
The author ultimately decided to focus on savoring the final months at Dartmouth, accepting the past and embracing the present before embarking on the next chapter.
