South Africa is set to implement more in-depth lifestyle audits for senior government officials, with calls for the process to be expanded across all departments. The move comes amid scrutiny of financial irregularities and alleged attempts to obstruct investigations into corruption.
Expanded Lifestyle Audits for Government Officials
The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) is expanding its scope of lifestyle audits, a move welcomed by the Public Servants Association (PSA). The PSA has called for decisive government action following the expansion, emphasizing the need to address corruption within the public sector.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) has requested parliamentary summonses for 11 departments, citing failures in conducting lifestyle audits. The party alleges that a lack of transparency and accountability has hindered efforts to combat corruption.
Calls for lifestyle audits extend to the Department of Basic Education, where allegations of attempts to obstruct investigations into the clean-up of the department have surfaced. These allegations are currently under scrutiny.
The audits aim to verify whether officials’ assets and liabilities are consistent with their official salaries and declared sources of income. The increased focus on lifestyle audits reflects a growing commitment to tackling corruption and promoting good governance in South Africa.
