A group of dirt bikers in South Auckland endangered public safety by driving recklessly, including into oncoming traffic and across sports fields where children were playing, police say.
Dirt Bike Riders Endanger Public in South Auckland
Numerous emergency calls were received around 3:45 p.m. regarding the incident. Police diverted the Eagle helicopter and dozens of staff to attempt to disperse the group, while also coordinating with local petrol stations to prevent refueling.
At one point, approximately 40 bikers were involved, according to police. Tāmaki Makaurau Duty Operations Manager Inspector Kerry Watson appealed for public assistance in locating the riders.
“We’re asking for assistance from the public so we can locate these riders as soon as possible before they kill someone or themselves,” Watson said. “It was horrifying behaviour, and to see riders speeding across sport fields where young kids are playing… you feel ill, because if something goes wrong, someone is going to be maimed or dead.”
Police are reviewing CCTV footage to identify those involved. “We are combing through CCTV footage, frame by frame, to identify those who were involved in this display of stupidity, and when we find out who they are, we’re going to have words,” Watson stated.
Authorities are requesting anyone with relevant dashcam or CCTV footage to come forward. A 25-year-old man from Ōtara has been arrested and faces charges of reckless driving and aggravated failing to stop. His bike has been impounded.
“Losing your bike isn’t the worst outcome when you consider that eventually someone is going to die riding like this, or they’re going to kill an innocent person,” Watson added.
