A drone strike targeting the M23 rebel movement near the Rubaya mining site in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo on February 24 killed at least ten people, including the group’s military spokesperson, while the military commander escaped unharmed.

Rubaya Mining Site Strike

The Congolese armed forces conducted the drone strike on the strategic mining hub of Rubaya on February 24. The target was the M23/AFC rebel movement.

Willy Ngoma, the M23 military spokesperson, was among those killed in the attack. Sources indicate that nine other people also perished.

There is a possibility of seven additional deaths related to the strike, though no further bodies have been recovered from the site as of yet.

The M23 has not yet released a statement regarding the attack.

Rubaya is a key mining site, producing between 15 and 30% of the world’s coltan, a rare earth mineral essential for computer technology and smartphones.

The M23 took control of the mining site during an offensive against the Congolese armed forces last year, capturing significant territory in eastern DRC.
