West Java Landslide Death Toll Rises
The landslide struck the Pasir Langu village, located approximately 60 miles (100 km) southeast of Jakarta, early Saturday. Heavy rains beginning the day prior are believed to have caused the disaster, and the weather agency has warned that similar conditions could persist for another week.
Ade Dian, of the Bandung Search and Rescue agency, stated that 17 individuals have been identified from a total of 34 body bags recovered. The names of identified victims can be confirmed at the Search and Rescue post.
The event follows recent cyclone-induced floods and landslides on the island of Sumatra, which occurred two months prior and resulted in 1,200 deaths and displaced over a million residents.
