A man has died and three others were injured after a Bus Éireann bus collided with a lamp-post on North Earl Street in Dublin city centre on Thursday. Gardaí are investigating the cause of the incident, with examinations of the bus underway to determine if a mechanical issue contributed to the crash.

Dublin Bus Crash Investigation Underway

The victim of the collision was named locally as Frank Daly (86), from East Wall in north Dublin. He was a regular customer at Ann’s Bakery on Mary Street, where a framed photograph and flowers were placed in his memory on Friday.

A male pedestrian in his 20s remains in hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The woman bus driver, in her 50s, and a female pedestrian in her 30s were also treated in hospital.

The double-decker bus, which was not in service at the time, came to a stop against a shop front after striking the lamp-post.

Council Considers Safety Measures

Dublin Lord Mayor has said there will be “learnings” for Dublin City Council as a result of the crash, including the possibility of placing bollards at the end of North Earl Street. Fine Gael Cllr Ray McAdam said he would discuss the matter with the local authority’s chief executive and chairperson of the mobility and public realms strategic policy committee next week.

McAdam stated the safety of public areas is continuously monitored, and that the Garda investigation will inform any action taken by the council. He highlighted the use of planters in pedestrianised areas as an example of existing safety measures.

Gardaí are trying to determine whether the driver may have suffered a health problem or was attempting to take evasive action.

Bus Éireann said it is offering support to the authorities as the investigation continues. “Our thoughts and heartfelt sympathies are with the family and loved ones of the person who has passed away, as well as with those who have been injured,” the company said in a statement on Friday.

President Catherine Connolly expressed her condolences to the family and wished those injured a speedy recovery. Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien also conveyed their thoughts and shock following the incident.
