Republican lawmakers are increasingly voicing opposition to any potential move by former President Donald Trump to acquire Greenland, with some calling the idea “buffoonery” and a “disaster.” The backlash comes after Trump reportedly renewed interest in the idea during recent private conversations.

Republican Resistance to Trump’s Greenland Pursuit

Several GOP members of Congress have publicly distanced themselves from Trump’s suggestion of purchasing Greenland, a self-governing Danish territory. Congressman Mike Turner of Ohio labeled the idea “the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard,” according to Politico.

Representative Michael McCaul of Texas went further, calling the prospect “buffoonery” in a statement to USA Today. Other Republicans have expressed concerns about the financial and strategic implications of such a purchase.

Former National Security Advisor John Bolton also weighed in, stating that a Trump attempt to acquire Greenland would be a “disaster” for the United States, according to Euronews.com.

Concerns have also been raised about the possibility of attempting to acquire Greenland by force. Republicans have vowed to block any such effort, according to The Hill.

Despite speculation about potential military involvement, White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby stated that there are “no boots on the ground” related to any acquisition plans, as reported by Fox News.

As of now, the idea remains largely hypothetical, but the growing opposition from within his own party presents a significant hurdle for any potential pursuit of Greenland by Trump.
