Larkin spoke publicly for the first time since news broke in early June that he had asked the Wings to move him following 11 seasons with the franchise. The 30-year-old center acknowledged the decision carried professional consequences.

Larkin described the choice as difficult and not a spur-of-the-moment decision, adding that there was a lot of personal stuff involved in reaching that point.

“There’s a lot there. A lot of personal stuff. To be honest with you − I’m going to try and be honest with you guys today. And that’s as far as I’ll go on that.”

Locker Room Reaction and Team Stance on the Future

Teammates have rallied around the forward as camp gets underway. Alternate captain Moritz Seider also weighed in on the uncertainty surrounding the roster.

“That wasn’t exactly something you saw coming. Everyone certainly has their reasons for making certain decisions. Whether I or we approve of it is not for us to answer. But it’s clear that we’re a better team when Dylan Larkin is on the roster and playing, than when he isn’t.”

Interim general manager Shawn Horcoff noted that the team feels they have a ton of leaders in the dressing room and does not expect the situation to become a distraction. Horcoff also highlighted upcoming contract business, pointing to restricted free agent defenseman Simon Edvinsson and forward Alex DeBrincat as roster priorities.

Trade Market Realities and Contract Terms

When Larkin initially requested a move, he utilized his no-trade clause to narrow his preferred destinations to the Florida Panthers, Minnesota Wild, and Vegas Golden Knights. However, market friction stalled any potential deal.

The Panthers and Knights showed limited interest, while the Wild lacked the NHL-ready assets required by Detroit. The Red Wings hold significant leverage with a player who is coming off five consecutive 30-goal seasons, centers the top line, and carries a club-friendly annual average value of $8.7 million with five years remaining on his contract.

With no permanent general manager in place following Steve Yzerman’s transition to a senior advisor role for Ilitch Holdings CEO Christopher Ilitch, any major trade decision remains on hold. Larkin continues to rehab his upper-body injury with the goal of returning to the ice when the Red Wings open their regular-season schedule against the New York Rangers on October 2, 2026.
