PUTRAJAYA, Jan 30 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is conducting an autonomous investigation into several top Department of Environment (DoE) officials, confirmed Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, dismissing any implication of Cabinet interference.
Investigation into DoE Officials
The MACC recently detained the DoE’s director-general and deputy director-general as part of a probe into illegal electronic waste activities.
As part of the investigation, the MACC has frozen 16 bank accounts containing RM10.2 million.
“From the Cabinet’s perspective, no action has been taken by the Cabinet itself in these cases,” Fahmi told reporters at his ministry’s weekly press conference. “These actions are entirely the responsibility of enforcement bodies such as the MACC.”
Fahmi stated the situation exemplifies the government’s commitment to allowing enforcement agencies to operate without political interference, a point recently emphasized by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Following a recent directive from the prime minister regarding enforcement failures, the Chief Secretary to the Government has instructed all ministry secretaries-general to strengthen internal integrity measures.
This directive aims to ensure proper governance and prevent incidents that could erode public trust in government institutions.
