The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has rejected a request from Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Abdul Qudoos Bugti to postpone local government elections in Quetta. The polls are scheduled to proceed as planned on December 28.
Quetta Local Government Polls to Proceed as Scheduled
Chief Minister Bugti had sought a delay citing security concerns and inclement weather conditions, according to reports. He expressed these concerns in meetings with provincial election officials and a delegation from the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI).
Despite the request, the ECP has maintained the election date. The decision was communicated following deliberations on the matter.
A JUI delegation also met with the Balochistan Provincial Election Commissioner to discuss the upcoming polls.
The Chief Minister’s request for postponement was based on the potential for disruptions due to both security challenges and adverse weather forecasts.
