End Elephant Rides Worldwide – One Green Planet

Indonesia has banned elephant rides nationwide, encompassing zoos, tourist locations, and conservation facilities. The ban recognizes elephants as intelligent, social animals that should roam freely, rather than be used for entertainment.

Indonesia Bans Elephant Rides Nationwide

The decision reflects a prioritization of animal welfare and environmental protection over profit. Officials state the ban applies to all facilities within Indonesia.

Elephant rides can cause lifelong physical harm to the animals, as their backs and spines are not designed to carry the weight of humans, particularly in hot climates. The training process for elephants providing rides often involves violent methods, including a practice known as “the crush,” which aims to break an elephant’s spirit through fear and pain.

Outside of providing rides, elephants are frequently chained and confined. Advocates argue this is not conservation.

Calls are now being made for other countries, including the US, India, and Thailand, to follow Indonesia’s lead. A petition is available to support a global end to elephant rides: Sign the petition now.
