China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in Addis Ababa, seeking strengthened cooperation with the East African nation in areas including infrastructure, green industries, and the digital economy.
Belt and Road Drive
Beijing expressed its readiness to align development strategies with Ethiopia to enhance their “all-weather strategic partnership.” Wang called for accelerated progress in trade and economic relations and the advancement of “high-quality Belt and Road cooperation” between China and Africa.
China views Ethiopia as a key partner under President Xi Jinping’s Belt and Road Initiative and aims to expand its presence in rapidly growing African markets. The International Monetary Fund projects Ethiopia’s economic growth at 7.2% this year.
Wang urged Ethiopia to foster a favorable environment for Chinese companies, recognizing the country’s significant role in regional and global affairs. Both nations agreed to deepen collaboration in trade, infrastructure, energy, transport, and legal cooperation, with expansion into e-commerce, artificial intelligence, green energy, culture, tourism, education, media, and think-tank exchanges.
Wang will continue his African tour with visits to Somalia, Tanzania, and Lesotho, concluding on January 12.
