Leaders from across Eurasia are meeting in St. Petersburg, Russia, over the next two days for gatherings of key regional integration bodies.
Eurasian Economic Union Meeting to Focus on Trade
Russian President Vladimir Putin will attend a meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council on Sunday in St. Petersburg, addressing current issues facing the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). A free trade agreement between the EAEU and the Republic of Indonesia is expected to be signed during the meeting, according to the Kremlin.
On Monday, Putin will also participate in a traditional informal gathering of leaders from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).
Regional Leaders Converge in Russia
Several regional leaders have already arrived in Russia for the meetings, including Presidents Shavkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan, Sadyr Japarov of Kyrgyzstan, and Alexander Lukashenko of Belarus. Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan are also expected to attend.
Putin is scheduled to hold separate meetings with Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on the sidelines of the CIS summit, according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov. Azerbaijan has not yet confirmed Aliyev’s participation.
