As of late July, global meteorological systems are signaling a significant thermal event driven by a surge of hot air originating directly from the Sahara. This heat is expected to intensify as a “heat dome”—a high-pressure system that acts like a lid on a pot, trapping warm air at all levels below it—settles over the southwestern portion of the continent, according to Severe Weather Europe. The highest temperature ever recorded in Spain reached 47.6 degrees Celsius in La Rambla on August 14, 2021.
The outlook for late July is particularly concerning for the Iberian Peninsula. Forecasters suggest that temperatures in Spain could climb to around 48 degrees Celsius, while coastal resorts like Benidorm may see maximum values reach approximately 45 degrees Celsius. Some models indicate that the mercury might hit 50 degrees Celsius in parts of southern Portugal by July 28. If these conditions manifest, they would eclipse the previous European record of 48.8 degrees Celsius, which was recorded near Syracuse, Sicily, on August 11, 2021, as noted by Pink.rs.
Health Risks and Infrastructure Strain
Beyond the raw temperature figures, the duration and intensity of this heat wave pose significant risks to public safety and infrastructure. While the Iberian Peninsula faces the most extreme projections, other parts of the continent are also preparing for significant heat. Southern France is currently identified as a zone of concern, with areas near Bordeaux potentially reaching 47 degrees Celsius by the end of the month. As the heat dome remains locked in place, the exact geographic spread of these record-challenging temperatures remains a key focus for local emergency services and meteorologists monitoring the situation through the final week of July.
