Imants Freibergs’ Life and Work

Vīķe-Freiberga wrote on social media, “My beloved Imants passed away this morning, resting in peace with God. In deep sorrow, I pray for his soul to have an easy journey.”

Born on March 12, 1934, in Valmiera, Latvia, Freibergs spent his early childhood in Latvia before emigrating with his parents to Germany in 1944. The family later moved to France and then to Canada in 1954.

Freibergs returned to Latvia in 1999 and remained there until his death. A book detailing his life, titled “Dari, kas jādara” (Do What Must Be Done), was published in 2024. The book recounts his experiences as a refugee, his 55 years living abroad, and his eventual return to his homeland.
