Five people died in the Scioto River in Powell, Ohio, on Sunday, July 19, 2026, after a rescue attempt turned tragic. The group, which included two sets of parents, was fishing when one person began to struggle in the water, prompting others to intervene. All five individuals ultimately drowned.
The Sequence of the Scioto River Tragedy
The incident began as a summer evening outing along the Scioto River in Powell, a northern suburb of Columbus. According to the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, the group had gathered to fish and enjoy the night before the situation escalated rapidly. Sheriff Jeffrey Balzer stated that the tragedy unfolded when one member of the party entered the water to swim and began to struggle.
As the initial swimmer faltered, others in the group attempted to provide assistance. According to Sheriff Balzer, two people initially went in to help, followed by two more as the situation worsened. None of the five individuals survived the attempt. The sheriff noted that the group is believed to have included two sets of parents, two children, and at least one other individual.
Emergency Response and Recovery
The alarm was raised around 9 p.m. on Sunday when a motorist spotted a clearly distraught
child running along a state highway near the river.

Rescue crews arrived on the scene Sunday night and were able to recover two women from the river. They were transported to area hospitals but were pronounced dead shortly after. The search for the remaining three members of the group continued into the following morning. Tracy Whited, a spokesperson for the Delaware County Sheriff’s Department, confirmed that the bodies of the three men were recovered on Monday.
River Conditions and Ongoing Investigation
Authorities have pointed to hazardous water conditions as a contributing factor in the incident. Data from a U.S. Geological Survey water gauge at a nearby dam showed that the river was running high and fast on Sunday, flowing at approximately 350 cubic feet per second.

The investigation into the specific circumstances of the drowning remains active. Sheriff Balzer indicated that there may be complications in the investigation due to a language barrier
among those present. Two children under the age of 10 who were with the group have been placed in the care of family services.
Safety Precautions Near Water
In the wake of the incident, officials have issued urgent reminders regarding water safety. Sheriff Balzer emphasized that individuals should be realistic about their swimming capabilities and the environmental conditions before entering natural bodies of water.
“Know your skill level before you get in the water. Are you a confident swimmer? Make sure you have other people around in case something goes wrong to notify someone. Wear a life preserver. Wear a life jacket. I get it. People think that somehow those are just for kids. But I tell you, they save everybody’s lives.”
