Over 12 million players since September 2024 have propelled Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 into its third year of post-launch support with Anniversary Update 2, introducing a Chaos-focused Siege mode, a one-handed Thunder Hammer, and a Year 3 roadmap featuring the Apothecary class coming in early 2027.
Publisher Focus Entertainment and developer Saber Interactive launched the second Anniversary Update on October 1, 2026, marking the beginning of the co-op shooter’s third year of post-launch content for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC players. The release arrives following a successful second year of support for the title, which has drawn over 12 million players since its September 2024 launch.
Chaos Siege Mode Brings Heretic Astartes to Avarax
The headline addition in the new update is Chaos Siege Mode, a wave-based PvE mode that shifts perspectives away from the standard Imperium defenders. For the first time outside of PvP, players can take control of Heretic Astartes to fight Tyranids, Imperial Guardsmen, and loyalist Space Marines across two distinct sectors set on Avarax with a third sector planned for a future update.

Version 15.0 arrives on consoles as patch version 1.015 | 1.015.000, bringing the forces of Chaos into the conflict between the Imperium and the Tyranids. Unlike previous PvP implementations where player sides were assigned randomly, this cooperative mode guarantees selection of a Chaos soldier from the start alongside allied teammates. Visual design cues from the update trailers show playable Heretic Astartes including the Death Guard, Night Lord, Word Eater, and Iron Warrior factions battling across the surface of Avarax.
Crucible System Adds Endgame Mode and Tactical Class Overhaul
Anniversary Update 2 also introduces the Crucible System, a new endgame PvE mode available for Level 25 classes that is launched through PvE Operations. Players apply Penances—such as debuffs and negative modifiers—to make missions more challenging in exchange for Crucible XP and unique customisation rewards, using a separate matchmaking pool from standard PvE to unlock the armour parts of the Lamenters set.
Alongside the Crucible rules, the Tactical class received a substantial overhaul to its skill tree aimed at granting more flexible builds. Developers noted that the class changes accommodate diverse playstyles whether utilizing two primary weapons, engaging in close combat, or executing Gun Strikes. Additionally, Close Targeting was removed and replaced with Vital Data to restore Auspex Scan charge by 50 percent upon scanning an Extremis or Terminus-level enemy, alongside Improved Efficiency to make Auspex Scan recharge 25 percent faster.
“A rework of the Tactical class perks, offering more flexible customisation options to suit your playstyle – whether that’s using two primary weapons, taking down enemies with Gun Strike, or engaging in close combat – as well as an expansion of the Tactical class’s melee weapon arsenal.”

New Weapon Variants and Cosmetic Packs Join the Armoury
The Armoury has also been stocked with three new Heroic variants for the Power Axe, Auto Bolt Rifle, and the Power Maul. Season Pass 3 holders gain access to the Space Wolves Champion Pack, which equips the Bulwark class with a Wolf Guard Battle Leader armor set and a Fenrisian storm shield, alongside the Exorcists Cosmetic Pack featuring daemon hunter-inspired helmets, pauldrons, gauntlets, and a breastplate.

Roadmap for 2027 and the Apothecary Class
Looking past the initial October update, the studio outlined a structured schedule for the remainder of Year 3. Patch 16 is slated to arrive before the end of 2026 with a new PvP mode featuring Weekly Stratagems mirroring PvE modifiers. Game director Dmitry Grigorenko also confirmed that crossplay text chat for console players is actively in development.
The studio officially confirmed the identity of the eighth playable character class following months of community speculation.

“We’ve been following all your speculations ever since we teased the arrival of a new class, and you certainly had plenty of theories… and the majority of you were right! Today, we’re finally revealing the truth: the Apothecary is joining the ranks with Patch 17 in the first quarter of 2027! We’ll disclose more info later, so stay tuned!”
