The Middle East conflict has intensified food security concerns across Southeast Asia, prompting ASEAN nations to increase regional cooperation and strengthen strategic partnerships with South Korea to mitigate supply chain disruptions.

  • Middle East conflicts are disrupting fertilizer supplies and driving up food prices across ASEAN nations.
  • South Korea provides critical multilateral support through the ASEAN Plus Three Emergency Rice Reserve and ICT-based data management.
  • Bilateral agrotechnology projects are targeting low-emission farming in Thailand and smart greenhouses in Indonesia.

Addressing Southeast Asia Food Security Challenges

Ongoing conflict in the Middle East has created significant vulnerabilities in the region, particularly through fertilizer shortages and disrupted supply chains. Malaysia and its neighbors are currently facing rising food prices and potential shortages.

ASEAN has prioritized food security since the 1979 ASEAN Food Security Reserve agreement. Recent efforts have been formalized in the “2045 ASEAN document,” which identifies poverty eradication and food security as central goals for the region’s future development.

Despite these priorities, many member countries continue to struggle with sustainability and adaptability, challenges that have been further compounded by El Niño and global geopolitical instability.

South Korea’s Strategic Support

South Korea has become a vital partner in ASEAN’s food security framework through both multilateral and humanitarian efforts. As part of the ASEAN Plus Three Emergency Rice Reserve, South Korea donated 3,000 metric tonnes of rice following an earthquake in Myanmar in 2026.

At the multilateral level, South Korea supports the Agricultural Research and Development for Sustainable Food Security (AFACI) and the ASEAN Food Security Information System (AFSIS). These initiatives promote sustainable farming and ICT-based data management systems.

Bilateral Agrotechnology Partnerships

Strategic cooperation between South Korea and individual ASEAN members focuses on upgrading technology and agricultural innovation. In Thailand, the partnership emphasizes low-emission rice cultivation, while efforts in Indonesia focus on smart greenhouses and improved cold chain logistics.

In Malaysia, the two nations have signed a formal MoU between their respective agriculture ministries to conduct livestock health monitoring research. Singapore is utilizing the partnership to diversify food imports and engage in joint agricultural research.

These collaborative frameworks align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, aiming to build long-term regional resilience against future food security crises.
