Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated uncertainty regarding the duration of the conflict in the Middle East, while asserting that efforts by the US and Israel to hinder Iran’s nuclear weapons development have been successful.
Albanese Addresses Middle East Conflict
“We’ll continue to argue for a de-escalation. It’s not certain, that’s the truth, how long this will last, but I’m hopeful that you can see an end point,” Albanese told reporters in Hobart.
He affirmed that the objectives of preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons have been achieved. “Iran’s ability to engage in attacks in the region have also been undermined by this process as well,” Albanese said.
Despite acknowledging a reduction in Iran’s capacity to launch attacks, Albanese condemned recent attacks originating from Iran targeting 12 countries in the region as “unprovoked.”
“There is no justification whatsoever for Iran undertaking these attacks,” he stated.
Albanese indicated continued monitoring and engagement, alongside ongoing calls for de-escalation in the region.
