Seven AAP Rajya Sabha MPs, led by Raghav Chadha, have merged with the BJP, triggering a wave of political criticism and a pointed social media response from the father of late singer Sidhu Moosewala.

  • Seven AAP Rajya Sabha MPs, including Raghav Chadha, have defected to the BJP.
  • Balkaur Singh, father of Sidhu Moosewala, cited his son’s song “Scapegoat” to question the betrayal.
  • Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann labeled the defecting MPs as “traitors” of Punjab.

Moosewala’s Father Reacts to AAP Rajya Sabha MPs Merge with BJP

Balkaur Singh, father of the late Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala, responded to the merger by posting lyrics from his son’s 2022 song, “Scapegoat,” on Facebook. The Punjabi verse asks, “Tell me who is responsible for what happened with the Rajya Sabha? Oh people, tell me now, who is the traitor?”

The song was released on April 11, 2022, and has since garnered over 65 million views on YouTube. It was written by Moosewala in response to AAP’s Punjab Rajya Sabha nominations, which were criticized for including non-Punjabis Raghav Chadha and Sandeep Pathak.

This is not the first time Balkaur Singh has used these lyrics politically. In 2023, he shared a reel using the same song after Sandeep Pathak made statements regarding the distribution of river water between Haryana and Punjab, an issue sensitive to the state.

Political Fallout and Allegations of Betrayal

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann condemned the move on Friday, calling Chadha and the other MPs “gaddar” or traitors. Mann asserted that the defectors were not mass leaders and could not win even a village election, claiming they were nominated only to bring diverse voices to the party.

Arvind Kejriwal reacted via a post on X, stating that the BJP had betrayed the people of Punjab. Meanwhile, Raghav Chadha justified the switch by claiming that the AAP is no longer working for the country, but is instead operating for personal gain.

Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring described the defection as natural due to a lack of ideology within the AAP. Warring suggested that the party should remain aware, as more MLAs might follow the MPs to the BJP.

Impact on Punjab Politics

Six of the seven MPs who defected are from Punjab, the state where AAP secured a landslide victory in 2022. Raghav Chadha, who has frequently described Punjab as his “soul,” joined the BJP just 10 months before the next Vidhan Sabha elections.

The move comes after a period of volatility for the party in the region, following the 2022 elections where Sidhu Moosewala had contested from Mansa on a Congress ticket but lost to AAP’s Dr. Vijay Singla.
