Social Democrats TD Gary Gannon has issued an apology to former minister for justice Alan Shatter for a social media post that wrongly linked Shatter to Jeffrey Epstein.
Gary Gannon Apologizes for Incorrect Epstein Link
Gannon and the Social Democrats “unreservedly apologise to Mr Alan Shatter for all damage and hurt caused” by the post made on January 31st, according to a statement released this afternoon.
The post included an image that falsely suggested a meeting took place between Shatter and Epstein. Gannon explained the image “wrongly and mistakenly” depicted an event that was, in fact, “mistaken and untrue.”
The image originated from an online record of the travel diary of former US attorney general Eric Holder. The meeting recorded was an official government engagement in Dublin between then minister Shatter and attorney general Holder on September 21, 2011, and had no connection to Epstein.
“I acknowledge that Alan Shatter never met or arranged to meet Mr Epstein nor had any relationship or contact with him,” Gannon stated.
Gannon noted that despite deleting the post, a screenshot continued to circulate online, resulting in Shatter “being wrongly targeted, vilified and subject to antisemitic abuse.”
Shortly after the apology, Shatter posted on X, stating, “I am glad this matter is resolved by the issuing of this statement by Gary Gannon TD & the Social Democrats.”
A party spokesperson declined to comment on the amount of damages paid to Shatter or whether the payment came from Gannon or the Social Democrats, stating they would not be expanding on the issued statement.
