Geisinger Wyoming Valley Expansion: $900 Million Project Reaches New Heights
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Construction is surging upward at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center as Turner Construction begins vertical construction on an ambitious $900 million expansion project. The milestone signifies a major leap forward in modernizing healthcare access for Northeastern Pennsylvania, transforming the hospital campus with a state-of-the-art, 11-story patient tower.
A Transformative Vision for Regional Healthcare
The nearly $900 million investment, announced with a groundbreaking in June 2024, isn’t merely an expansion; it’s a comprehensive overhaul designed to nearly double the hospital’s size and dramatically enhance its clinical capabilities. Geisinger’s vision centers on expanding services across key areas including emergency medicine, surgical specialties, critical care, and cardiovascular health. This expansion addresses a critical need for increased capacity and advanced medical services within the region.
Steel Rising: The New Patient Tower Takes Shape
As of March 11, 2026, steel is rapidly ascending for the 600,000-square-foot patient tower. Once complete, the tower will increase the hospital’s bed count from 356 to 500, providing much-needed relief during peak demand. The expansion also includes a significant increase in operating rooms – from 12 to 18 – and a larger, more efficient emergency department. A key component of the project is the transition to 100% private patient rooms, prioritizing patient comfort and privacy.
“This milestone marks an important step forward in delivering expanded, modern healthcare access for families across Northeastern Pennsylvania,” stated David Kaminski, Vice President and Senior General Manager at Turner Construction. “We are proud to partner with Geisinger on a transformational project that will enhance patient care, support caregivers, and strengthen this community for decades to come.”
Economic Impact and Job Creation
The Geisinger Wyoming Valley expansion is projected to have a substantial economic impact on the local community. Turner Construction estimates the project will support up to 3,800 construction jobs and generate approximately $1 billion in economic activity. The onsite workforce is expected to peak at 450 workers. Beyond construction, Geisinger plans to add 400 new permanent employees upon completion of the project, further bolstering the local economy.
Geisinger’s commitment extends beyond physical infrastructure. The investment reflects a broader strategy to ensure residents of Northeastern Pennsylvania have access to world-class healthcare without needing to travel outside the region. As Terry Gilliland, M.D., Geisinger’s President and CEO, explained, “No one should have to leave this area for the care they need, and we can ensure that by investing in advanced facilities, programs and technology right here in Luzerne County.”
Comprehensive Upgrades Across Disciplines
The expansion encompasses a wide range of upgrades designed to elevate the standard of care at Geisinger Wyoming Valley. In addition to the increased bed capacity and private rooms, the project includes:
- 58 new medical/surgical inpatient beds
- 24 additional ICU beds
- 22 new emergency treatment rooms
- Dedicated emergency room space for behavioral health patients
- Expanded trauma capabilities
- Six new operating rooms
- Replacement cardiac catheterization labs
- Two new structural heart rooms
- Expanded clinic space and cardiac imaging facilities
The first phase of the project, focusing on the bed tower and emergency department renovations, is slated for completion in 2028. Renovations to other areas of the hospital are expected to continue through 2030. Turner Construction anticipates the facility will be fully operational in the first quarter of 2028.
What impact will these expanded cardiovascular services have on patient outcomes in the region? And how will the increased capacity in emergency and trauma care affect response times and the quality of care delivered during critical situations?
