The German national team achieved a successful result at the 67th International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) held in Shanghai, with all six participants earning medals. The competition, which serves as the world’s most prestigious mathematics event for students, saw the German delegation secure one gold, two silver, and three bronze medals.

In the final country rankings, Germany placed 19th out of 117 participating nations. The host nation, the People’s Republic of China, earned the top spot, followed by the United States and Russia.
Performance and Medals
During the tournament, the participants faced two rigorous exams consisting of three complex problems each, described as significantly exceeding university-level mathematics.

The German team’s performance included the following honors: * Gold Medal: Johannes Jacob, 17, from Munich. * Silver Medal: Clemens Böke, 18, from Löhne, and Benedict Sittig, 17, from Geisenheim. * Bronze Medal: Ben Fischer, 17, from Braunschweig; Grigorii Kukanov, 18, from Munich; and David Kurniady, 18, from Erlangen.
Bavarian Minister of Education Anna Stolz congratulated the students, noting that the three Bavarian participants distinguished themselves on the international stage through their curiosity and dedication. Stolz specifically highlighted the success of Johannes Jacob, marking a return to gold for the state since 2022.
Qualification and Preparation
The journey to the international stage began with the national selection process. Students first qualified through the Bundeswettbewerb Mathematik and the Mathematik-Olympiade in Germany. Following their initial qualification, the top 16 candidates participated in a series of preparation seminars between January and June. During this period, the final six team members had to prove their proficiency through seven additional qualifying exams.

The selection process and preparation seminars are organized by the nationwide mathematics competitions hosted by the talent promotion center Bildung & Begabung. The center, a non-profit institution under the Stifterverband, operates with support from the Federal Ministry of Education and the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs.
Context of the Competition
The International Mathematics Olympiad has been held annually since 1959, with each year hosted by a different nation. The competition requires students to solve problems across various mathematical disciplines, including algebra, combinatorics, geometry, and number theory. Each participating country is permitted to send up to six representatives. Nearly 700 students from over 100 countries regularly participate in the event. Following the conclusion of the 67th edition in Shanghai, the competition is scheduled to move to Hungary next year.
While human students continue to compete for titles, the field of mathematics has also seen the emergence of artificial intelligence systems designed to solve similar problems. Researchers associated with Google DeepMind recently developed a system called “AlphaProof,” which utilizes reinforcement learning to produce formal proofs. While such systems have reached a level of performance capable of earning a silver medal at the IMO, the event remains a primary venue for showcasing the problem-solving capabilities of young human mathematicians.
