A 21-year-old man has been charged after a violent Gold Coast car theft spree that left a taxi overturned and a stolen Lexus submerged in a backyard swimming pool.

The suspect was apprehended by dog squad officers after being spotted sitting astride a fence.

The incident began around 1 a.m. when the man allegedly entered a Nerang residence and stole a BMW after being disturbed by the occupant.
At approximately 1:45 a.m., the suspect allegedly forced a taxi to stop and demanded fuel while indicating he possessed a weapon. When the taxi driver attempted to flee, the BMW rammed the vehicle, causing it to roll onto its side down an embankment.

The suspect continued driving along Beaudesert-Nerang Road, where he crashed into a fence and a parked horse float. Around 2 a.m., he allegedly fled on foot to a neighboring property and attempted to steal a black Lexus IS250, which he drove into a swimming pool during his escape attempt.
Following his arrest, police discovered a syringe, utensils, and dangerous drugs in the man’s possession. He was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital for observation.
The man, a resident of Goodna, has been charged with attempted armed robbery, dangerous operation of a vehicle, and three counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle. He was set to appear in Southport Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
