Google has officially deployed AI Overviews and AI Mode in France, marking a significant shift in how the search engine presents information to users. According to msn.com, these features integrate the Gemini chatbot directly into the search experience, moving away from the platform’s traditional interface.
How the New AI Features Work
AI Overviews, referred to as “Aperçu IA” in French, generates a synthetic summary using Google’s Gemini AI at the top of search results. This summary appears when the AI determines it is relevant to a user’s query, providing an answer alongside traditional web links. While the links remain visible, the summary is designed to provide immediate information, potentially reducing the need for users to click through to external websites.
In addition to Overviews, Google has introduced “AI Mode.” This feature provides a dedicated tab that switches the search interface to a conversational format. This allows users to engage directly with Gemini for more detailed responses or to ask follow-up questions. According to msn.com, these tools are enabled by default, and Google does not provide a native setting to disable them. Users seeking to avoid the AI content may need to use browser extensions, select the “Web” tab to view classic results, or switch to alternative search engines.
Impact on Publishers and Traffic
The introduction of these features has raised concerns regarding the sustainability of independent websites and media outlets. Data indicates that when an AI summary is displayed, the click-through rate to top search results can drop by more than 60%. Reports from rfi.fr suggest that French media outlets fear audience declines ranging from 20% to 40%.

The Regulatory Context
France’s delay in receiving these features, despite their presence in over 120 countries for two years, has been linked to legal challenges. Google has faced significant financial penalties in France, including fines of 500 million and 250 million euros related to negotiations with press publishers. Additionally, on June 29, the tribunal of economic activities ordered Google to pay 126 million euros in damages related to its automated advertising practices.
Reliability and Search Behavior
The shift toward AI-generated summaries has prompted criticism regarding the accuracy of information. Concerns persist regarding potential biases in the content used to train the AI and the risk of hallucinations.
Because the AI summary occupies the most prominent position on the search page, there is a risk that users may rely on these summaries without verifying the information against original sources.
Research from Ahrefs cited by actualitte.com suggests that AI Overviews are heavily concentrated on informational queries—such as definitions or “how-to” questions—which appear in 99.9% of AI-generated previews. Conversely, transactional or purchase-related queries trigger these summaries in only about 3% of cases. This trend poses a specific challenge for blogs, review sites, and cultural publications that rely on informational traffic to sustain their operations.
