MANILA, Philippines – As tensions rise in the Middle East following strikes on Iran by the United States and Israel, the Philippine government is preparing assistance, including repatriation, for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).
Repatriation Assistance Process
OFWs seeking repatriation should first contact official government platforms through walk-in visits to offices or embassies, the OWWA primary hotline at 1348, DMW and OWWA hotlines overseas here, Viber at 09150795005, 09691697068, or 09664739543, WhatsApp at 09563197589, 09686940706, or 09563197586, the eGovPH app, or via email at [email protected].
OWWA encourages the use of its primary hotline and the eGovPH app for repatriation requests. After submission, welfare officers will assess the OFW’s safety and needs before confirming the request. They will then provide instructions regarding travel documents, including transit or exit visas if required, and arrange transportation to the nearest and safest border for repatriation via commercial or chartered flights.
The DMW has assured OFWs that the government will cover any immigration fines or penalties, as well as provide basic necessities and temporary accommodations.
Post-Repatriation and Reintegration Aid
Upon repatriation, OFWs can access psychosocial and medical interventions coordinated with the Department of Health and the Department of Social Welfare and Development. Other assistance includes social security benefits coordinated with Pag-IBIG Fund and the Social Security System, housing assistance through the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development, employment assistance via special job fairs coordinated with the Department of Labor and Employment, upskilling vouchers from the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, and livelihood grants coordinated with the Department of Trade and Industry.
This effort is part of the government’s One-Country Team Approach, ensuring coordination among agencies responsible for OFW welfare.
On-Site Assistance
Host countries have designated shelters to assist OFWs with identification and travel documents. Facilities identified by migrant workers offices are also available. While remaining in the host country or awaiting repatriation, OFWs can receive food, water, basic necessities, financial assistance for those whose jobs are affected, transportation, and medical and psychosocial support.
Pre-Departure and In-Transit Assistance
For those stranded in the Philippines, the DMW registers them in a centralized database and provides immediate assistance, including food, accommodations, and transportation home. The DMW is also working with airlines for rebooking and redeployment, though flight schedules are currently volatile. Those stranded in transit hubs receive airport assistance, plane tickets, and accommodations while coordinating with the DMW and the DFA.
