The Great American Beer Festival moved outdoors to Denver’s Levitt Pavilion on October 10 and 11, 2026, featuring over 200 breweries and a return to festival roots amid a changing industry.
For decades, the Colorado Convention Center hosted the sprawling annual gathering of the nation’s brewing industry. This year, festival organizers at the [Brewers Association](https://www.denver7.com/money/consumer/a-changing-brewing-industry-mean-this-years-great-american-beer-fest-has-a-different-look) shifted the event to the outdoor stage at Ruby Hill Park, stripping away elaborate themed zones, silent discos, and costume contests to focus purely on live music, food trucks, and direct pours from brewers.
The scale of the festival reflects changing commercial trends. The 207-brewery menu is far shorter than in the past, built around a strict curation metric prioritizing quality over sheer volume.

## Industry Pressures and Shifting Consumer Habits Across the Country
The streamlined festival roster arrives against a backdrop of broader economic friction for producers. According to Brewers Association data cited by Denver7, total U.S. beer production and imports dropped 5.7% in 2025. Smaller craft breweries saw sales fall by 4% while retail craft sales dropped 2.8% to $28 billion.
Fewer craft facilities opened nationwide in 2025 compared to 2024, and a couple hundred closed their doors entirely. Watson pointed to a combination of pinched household budgets and generational shifts in beverage preference, noting that the next generation comes into beverage alcohol a little bit differently.

Producers are responding by diversifying their portfolios. Ratio Beerworks in Denver expanded its taproom menu to include gluten-free and non-alcoholic options, a pivot taproom operations general manager Eric Matelski described as a way to grow the market beyond traditional consumers who might otherwise skip a dingy taproom lacking fun things to do.
## Pacific Northwest and Carolinas Brewers Take Home Medals in Denver
The annual competition evaluated entries from across the United States. A total of 243 breweries and cideries shared 336 medals from 7,267 beer and cider entries judged by 225 expert judges over three days, with entries coming from 49 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico, according to competition statistics.
In the Pacific Northwest, Washington breweries captured 17 medals, while Oregon operations secured 34. Washington winners included Grains of Wrath Brewing in Camas, which led the state with three medals comprising two gold and one silver, as detailed by [The Washington Beer Blog](https://washingtonbeerblog.com/2026-gabf-winners-announced/).

Breakside Brewery accepted its Brewery of the Year award in Oregon, where the Pacific Northwest came away with plenty of hardware. Across the competition categories, judges evaluated an average of 67 beers per category, with the West Coast-Style India Pale Ale division drawing the highest number of entries at 277.
In the Carolinas, Model A Brewing Co. in Tega Cay, South Carolina, won a bronze medal in the Wood and Barrel Aged Beer category for Amber Hearth, an oak-aged winter warmer the brewery first released as its 2024 anniversary beer. The South Carolina Brewers Guild previously named Model A the Best Overall Brewery in South Carolina at the South Carolina Brewers Cup after six of its beers medaled. Liability Brewing Co. in Greenville added a gold medal for Feral Garden Gnome in the Belgian Style Abbey Ale division. Across the state line, Charlotte-area producers also claimed hardware, including Armored Cow Brewing Co. of Charlotte, which won two medals: gold for Hell Yeah in the Hoppy Gluten Free Beer category and bronze for Raspberry Rush in Fruit Wheat Beer, a category of 64 entries, according to reporting from the [Fort Mill Sun](https://wwwinfo.fortmillsun.com/2026/10/11/model-a-brewings-amber-hearth-medals-at-great-american-beer-festival/).

## National Standouts Highlighted by Festival Observers
Beyond the official competition podium, festival analysts and local guides highlighted prominent craft producers pouring at events across the Denver area during the weekend.
Local taprooms hosted auxiliary events throughout the weekend, including Hops & Pie on Tennyson Street tapping beers all weekend from Monkish, Other Half, Veil, Foam, and Riip, while Ratio Beerworks’ Overland location hosted brewers guilds from Texas, New Mexico, Oregon, New York, Montana, Florida, and Colorado, demonstrating that the broader culture around the festival continues to thrive independently of its venue footprint.
