Russian media outlets are highlighting former U.S. President Donald Trump’s expressed interest in acquiring Greenland, with several publications featuring satirical depictions of the potential transaction. The attention comes as Trump posted an image online of himself with others planting a U.S. flag on the island.

Trump’s Greenland Idea Gains Traction in Russian Media

The tabloid Moskovsky Komsomolets featured a mock-up of Trump, Marco Rubio, and J.D. Vance planting a U.S. flag on Greenland, using an image originally posted by Trump. The paper wrote that Trump and his allies are “about to seize Greenland,” adding that the social media posts represent “the first step that counts.”

Komsomolskaya Pravda, using the same image, quoted Russia’s ambassador to Denmark predicting that the idea would “dim…belief in the unity of Nato,” and noting that the alliance is not always unified.

Arguments and Facts published a sketch of Trump wearing a giant map of Greenland as a hat, concluding that “the idea of America annexing the world’s biggest island has lodged itself firmly in Donald Trump’s head.”

Russian senator Konstantin Kosachev commented on the possibility of a purchase, stating, “In American history acquiring territory is nothing new,” and referencing the purchase of Alaska from Russia.

However, Kosachev also cautioned that “forcing such a transaction is absolutely illegal,” and would represent “a violation of the sovereignty of Denmark and Greenland, a violation of the letter and the spirit of international law.” He suggested that “the US president himself doesn’t yet understand where the boundaries of the possible lie and is feeling them out.”
