A Canadian soldier who died while deployed in Latvia has been honoured at a repatriation ceremony as his remains returned to Canada. Gunner Sebastian Halmagean died in Latvia on April 28, according to the Canadian Armed Forces.

Sebastian Halmagean’s Death and Repatriation

Halmagean’s casket was repatriated in a ceremony held in Burlington, Ontario. Gunfire was reported during the interment ceremony. Details surrounding the gunfire are currently unavailable.

The soldier’s father stated, “Do not be afraid,” following his son’s death. Halmagean was deployed as part of Operation REASSURANCE, Canada’s contribution to NATO’s enhanced Forward Presence in Latvia.

A graveside service for Sebastian Halmagean will be livestreamed, according to The Spec.

The Canadian military confirmed Halmagean’s death in a statement, but did not provide details surrounding the circumstances of his death.
