Pasir Ris Fire Extinguished by Residents

A video of Mr. Pravin @ Kayden Zaqarya Abdullah, attempting to put out the fire while wearing a traditional white “jubah” (thobe), circulated online, drawing attention to the incident.

Muslims in Singapore celebrated Hari Raya Aidilfitri on March 21, with festivities typically lasting about a month.

Mr. Kayden’s wife, Ms. Icha, said they were visiting her aunt when they heard a bell and smelled burning at around 8:30 p.m. Mr. Kayden then discovered a fire at the first-floor rubbish chute of a neighboring block.

“He immediately went down and opened the shutter (to the rubbish chute and) that’s when we saw how big the fire was,” Ms. Icha said, adding that her two brothers assisted Mr. Kayden.

Video footage shows Mr. Kayden and a member of the public using fire extinguishers to combat the blaze, while another individual used a hose.

Officers from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) arrived and extinguished the fire. SCDF responded to a report of the fire at Block 150 Pasir Ris Street 13 at approximately 8:30 p.m.

According to SCDF, members of the public had already extinguished the fire using a hosereel and dry powder fire extinguishers before their arrival. No injuries were reported.

The fire involved rubbish within a centralized chute, and the cause is currently under investigation. Ms. Icha stated it took about 10 minutes to fully extinguish the fire.

Ms. Icha noted her husband, a 31-year-old paramedic at a private company, reacted instinctively, having previously assisted in critical situations such as traffic accidents.
