Romas on Political Discourse and the Leftist Nomenklatura

Haris Romas, a well-known actor who has also pursued a political career as a candidate for mayor of Chalandri, used his appearance on the Omada Alithias platform to voice frustration over the current state of political debate in Greece. He characterized his opponents as a leftist nomenklatura that seeks to dominate public discourse while delegitimizing those who hold opposing views. Romas stated, You know what they want, this leftist nomenklatura. These leftists, anyway. They want to insult you and for you not to speak. It is as if they are telling you: I will insult you and you will be silent. Silence in the cage (Μούγκα στη στρούγκα).

Romas emphasized that he addresses these concerns calmly in his discussions. During the interview, he contrasted this behavior with the government’s efforts to respond to accusations from political rivals. He specifically cited Adonis Georgiadis, describing him as a figure who shows the necessary courage to challenge Alexis Tsipras directly. Referring to the government’s response to political narratives, Romas noted, When this government and this prime minister are accused openly even by their opponents, the political leaders, as murderers, when they are all accused together as murderers and child rapists, you come out, you who have the greatest courage, Adonis (Georgiadis) and says to Tsipras: I do not accept that you are more honest.

Romas suggested that this rhetoric is part of a deliberate strategy, stating, Because it stands out, it is obvious that they said: What narrative do we have with the rebranding? I am the most honest and you are the most corrupt. I read it everywhere. He added that when government figures respond in kind, they face an uproar from everyone, even from the leftist intelligentsia: ‘Cursed, disgusting, old-scoundrel who reinforces the division.’

Defending Public Figures Amid Social Backlash

A significant portion of Romas’s commentary addressed the treatment of other public figures who have faced public criticism for their political stances. He specifically referenced Thodoris Atheridis, who recently drew fire for praising authorities regarding the investigation into the Marfin incident. Romas defended Atheridis, describing him as a man who had never bothered anyone and who had a history of social and charitable sensitivity. He argued that the criticism Atheridis received was “tragicomic” and symptomatic of a broader intolerance toward those who deviate from certain ideological norms.

Romas questioned the motives of those who criticized the arrest of individuals involved in terrorism, stating, If you don’t want the arrest of terrorists to be considered good, then you might be one of those, who doesn’t dare to do it but would like to, who go outside the courts and shout ‘leave our comrades free.’ Which comrades? Those who burned a woman?

The Debate Over Political Expression

The interview also touched upon other public figures, such as Bofiliou. Romas defended Bofiliou’s right to express her personal political aspirations, noting, It is Bofiliou’s right to say I would like to climb the mountain.

The interview has highlighted a recurring tension in the Greek public sphere regarding the boundaries of political speech. While Romas argues that a segment of the left is actively working to enforce a culture of silence, he maintains that the presence of platforms like Omada Alithias allows conservatives to express themselves and avoid being forced into silence.
