Highland cattle sales saw strong prices at recent auctions, with bulls peaking at 11,000gns and heifers reaching 8,000gns. The sales featured genetics from prominent Isle of Mull and other Scottish folds, attracting buyers from across the UK and internationally.

Highland Bull Sales Reach 11,000gns

Fingal 5 of Culfoich hit 11,000gns when purchased by Duncan Buchanan, Benderloch, setting a fold best for Gordon McConachie and family, Grantown. The junior male champion from last year’s Royal Highland Show is sired by Bryden 2 of Culfoich and out of Laria 1 of Culfoich.

Four bulls sold for 10,000gns each. Ruaridh of Airyolland, a son of Ruaridh 2 of Glengorm, was purchased by T. Nelson, Tobermory. Fear A Ghlinne of Black Glen, sired by Seamus of Craigowmill, went to Kevin Rice, Maidstone. Balrownie Farms, Brechin, secured Coinneach of Ardbhan, a Ruaridh of Craigowmill son, while Prionnsa Ruadh of Cross Reguill, a Black Prince of Ranch son, sold to R. and S. Strachan, Isle of Mull.

Heifer Sales Topped at 8,000gns

Kirsty 9 of Gartocharn, a three-year-old and reserve female champion, peaked at 8,000gns. Bred by Jim and Catherine McKechnie, Dumbartonshire, the champion at Drymne is by Brodie of Culfoich and out of Kirsty Morag of Ubaidh. Coul Estate, Newtonmore, purchased the heifer.

Cally of Luruha, sired by Cameron of Sguir Mor, sold to Huraco Rarebreeds, Sheffield, for 6,500gns. Coul Estate also purchased Boidheach Ruadh 11 of Broomrigg, a two-year-old daughter of Asainte of Strathellie, for 5,500gns.

Averages for the sales were: Bulls – 12 two-year-olds, £5,162.50; 8 three-year-olds, £3,924.38; 1 aged, £3,150; 4 yearlings, £3,018.75. Heifers – 3 three-year-olds, £4,829.93; 5 two-year-olds, £3,613; 21 yearlings, £2,675.
