The House Oversight Committee voted to hold Bill and Hillary Clinton in contempt of Congress for their refusal to comply with subpoenas related to the investigation into the origins of the Russia investigation and their involvement with the Jeffrey Epstein case. The vote falls largely along party lines, with Republicans supporting the measure and Democrats largely opposing it.
Clinton Contempt Vote Details
The committee approved two resolutions, one for Bill Clinton and one for Hillary Clinton, according to reports. The subpoenas sought testimony and documents related to their knowledge of Epstein’s alleged sex trafficking operation and their roles in the investigation into the 2016 presidential election.
Committee Chairman James Comer dared Democrats to advance the contempt resolutions or “be exposed as hypocrites,” according to Fox News. He accused Democrats of obstructing the investigation and protecting the Clintons.
Democratic Opposition and Revolt
The vote was met with resistance from some Democrats, with Axios reporting a “shock revolt” within the party. Several Democrats expressed concerns about the political motivations behind the investigation and the potential for a politically charged impeachment inquiry.
Democrats argued that the subpoenas were overly broad and lacked a legitimate legislative purpose. They also criticized Republicans for focusing on what they called a politically motivated investigation rather than addressing pressing issues facing the country.
The resolutions now head to the full House for a vote. If approved, the Justice Department would then decide whether to pursue criminal charges.
C-SPAN reported that the committee debated the contempt of Congress resolution for Bill & Hillary Clinton extensively before the vote took place.
