Indonesia’s aquaculture industry is on track to meet its 2025 production target, with farmed fish production reaching 5.02 million tons in the third quarter, according to the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP).
Indonesia Aquaculture Production Nears Yearly Target
The latest figures represent 96.95 percent of the yearly target of 5.17 million tons, said Haeru Rahayu, KKP’s Director General of Aquaculture, at a press conference in Jakarta on Thursday. Production figures for October, November, and December are currently being calculated, with hopes of achieving the full-year goal.
Revenue from the farmed fish sub-sector has also exceeded expectations, surpassing its target by 391.55 percent due to supportive measures implemented by KKP’s technical units. Beyond fish, Indonesia’s aquaculture industry has produced 8.2 million tons of seaweed as of September, representing 94.97 percent of the 2025 target of 8.63 million tons.
The ministry is adopting a blue economy approach, balancing ecological and economic benefits, with a focus on five high-value commodities: shrimp, seaweed, tilapia, crabs, and lobsters. Shrimp exports currently generate between US$1.1 billion and US$2 billion annually.
To further increase national production, KKP is focusing on three strategies: developing aquaculture pilot projects, revitalizing farming ponds, and strengthening community-based aquaculture villages. A pilot project in Karawang District, West Java, has designated 315 hectares as an aquaculture zone, with plans to expand to 400 hectares by year-end.
A 2,000-hectare integrated shrimp farming zone is also under development in East Sumba District, East Nusa Tenggara, with an estimated investment of Rp7 trillion (around US$420 million). This project is expected to produce at least 75,000 tons of shrimp and create approximately 10,000 jobs.
Rahayu affirmed that all ongoing aquaculture programs aim to improve the welfare of cultivators while ensuring environmental and resource sustainability.
