Indonesia has delayed the deportation of Scottish crime boss Steven Lyons, a key figure in an international drug trafficking and money laundering syndicate, until Thursday. Lyons, who had been on the run for months, was detained on Saturday at a Bali airport following an Interpol Red Notice issued by Spain.
Steven Lyons’ Arrest and Delayed Deportation
Steven Lyons, 45, was originally scheduled to be deported to Spain via Doha on Wednesday evening, but the deportation has been postponed without explanation, according to Husnan Handano, a spokesperson for Bali’s immigration office.
Lyons was arrested upon arrival at Bali’s Ngurah Rai international airport from Singapore. The arrest was prompted by an Interpol Red Notice, an international alert for police worldwide to arrest a suspect for extradition, requested by Spain.
Authorities allege Lyons is the leader of the Lyons crime family and was wanted in both Spain and Britain. He has been on Spain’s wanted list for approximately two years following a murder in 2024.
Transnational Criminal Network
Bali Police Chief Daniel Adityajaya stated the arrest is the result of a joint investigation involving Spanish and Scottish police. Lyons is suspected of leading a transnational criminal network operating out of Scotland, controlling narcotics trafficking routes from Spain to the United Kingdom.
The criminal network is also suspected of using shell companies for money laundering across Europe and the Middle East, including in Spain, Scotland, England, Dubai, Qatar, Bahrain and Turkey.
Prior to his arrest in Bali, police in Scotland and Spain conducted raids linked to the case, resulting in multiple arrests. Suspects were also detained in Turkey, the Netherlands and the United Arab Emirates.
According to Scottish media reports, Lyons survived a 2006 shooting in Glasgow that resulted in the death of his cousin. He subsequently moved to Spain and later settled in Dubai. Last May, his brother and an associate were killed in a suspected gangland shooting in Fuengirola, Spain.
