Indonesia expresses desire to expand defence ties with Pakistan – Dawn

Indonesia is seeking to expand its defence ties with Pakistan, with a particular interest in procuring JF-17 Thunder fighter jets and drones. Discussions between Indonesian and Pakistani officials indicate a potential defence deal is nearing completion.

Expanding Defence Cooperation

Indonesian Defence Minister Prabowo Subianto and Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Asim Munir, recently discussed bilateral security ties and explored avenues for enhanced cooperation. The talks focused on strengthening collaboration in defence production, technology transfer, and joint military exercises.

Sources indicate Indonesia is keen to acquire the JF-17 Block 3, a multi-role combat aircraft co-developed by Pakistan and China. The potential procurement also includes Pakistani-made drones, which Indonesia views as crucial for enhancing its surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities.

The move is seen as a strategic defence initiative by Jakarta to modernize its air force and bolster its national security. Indonesia has been actively seeking to diversify its defence procurement sources and reduce its reliance on traditional suppliers.

Details of the prospective deal, including the number of jets and drones involved and the financial terms, are still being finalized. However, both sides have expressed strong commitment to reaching an agreement in the near future.
