Indonesia is preparing to implement a nationwide single rice price policy beginning in 2026, aiming to eliminate price discrepancies between regions. The initiative will include government support for distribution financing to overcome logistical hurdles, particularly in eastern Indonesia.
Single Rice Price Policy Planned for Indonesia
The policy seeks to ensure uniform rice prices across the archipelago, Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan said Monday. Hasan stated, “We don’t want eastern Indonesia to pay higher prices. In 2026, we will strive to apply a single rice price nationwide,” following a coordination meeting on food affairs.
Strengthening the role of the state-owned logistics agency Bulog is crucial to the plan, specifically in managing rice distribution and maintaining national price stability. Discussions are underway to provide Bulog with an assignment margin to ensure adequate financing for these tasks.
Authorities are also monitoring national rice supply conditions, anticipating that the main harvest season may begin earlier, starting in February, which is expected to contribute to price stability.
Reference prices being considered include approximately 14,900 rupiahs (about 0.96 U.S. dollars) per kilogram for premium rice and 13,500 rupiahs per kilogram for medium rice. Rice for lower-income groups is currently sold at between 11,000 and 12,000 rupiahs per kilogram under Bulog’s subsidized food supply and price stabilization program.
Hasan noted that the single-price rice policy is still under preparation and requires coordinated support in distribution, financing, and infrastructure.
