Indonesia plans to launch a National Command Center for its Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program in mid-May 2026 to strengthen national coordination and improve the quality of food services.
- Launch Date: The command center is scheduled to open around May 17, 2026.
- Operational Challenges: 1,789 Nutrition Fulfillment Service Units (SPPG) were suspended as of April 24 due to hygiene issues and food poisoning.
- Primary Objective: To enhance governance, service standards, and synergy between central and regional governments.
Nani Hendiarti, the Deputy for Food Affordability and Security Coordination at the Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs, stated that the facility will be based at the ministry. The center is designed to oversee the implementation of the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program across the country.
The initiative seeks to ensure the program meets its 2026 intervention targets by focusing on effectiveness, better menu planning, and expanded nutrition education.
Improving Service Standards for the MBG Program
Addressing current failures in service delivery, Hendiarti noted that 1,789 Nutrition Fulfillment Service Units (SPPG) were temporarily suspended as of April 24. This is a decrease from approximately 3,000 units previously suspended.
The suspensions were primarily driven by food poisoning incidents and inadequate hygiene facilities at the service sites.
Some cases have proven difficult to resolve, necessitating consultations with the National Nutrition Agency (BGN), the main organizer of the program. Hendiarti indicated that some units may require relocation or other corrective solutions.
The government continues to prioritize governance improvements and the expansion of program coverage to ensure the effective delivery of nutritional benefits this year.
