Interfaith Body Condemns Health Speculation as Treasonous

Political tensions in Malawi have escalated following sharp public remarks concerning the national leadership. The Interfaith Forum for Peace, Justice and Dialogue issued a strongly worded statement targeting public commentary surrounding President Peter Mutharika’s health. Reverend Damson Mchenga, signing as the organization’s secretary general, characterized the speculation as both inflammatory and treasonous.

The interfaith coalition took aim at comments made by CDEDI Executive Director Sylvester Namiwa, who had pointed toward the possibility of a shift in the presidency within a two-month window. According to the religious body, suggesting an imminent transition in national leadership crosses a dangerous line and risks stoking unnecessary fear and instability across the country.

Calls for Confidentiality and Restraint Amid Political Tensions

Beyond addressing the remarks on national leadership, the religious organization appealed to all Malawians to treat personal medical matters with the same discretion extended to private citizens. The interfaith group insisted that personal health remains confidential unless disclosed directly by the individuals involved, regardless of the public office they hold.

This intervention follows weeks of heightened political friction regarding the health and standing of senior political figures in Malawi. Namiwa’s prior public statements regarding Vice-President Jane Ansah’s political trajectory had already sparked fierce backlash from government officials and religious leaders alike.

Faith Community Urges Caution in Public Discourse

The religious coalition’s statement underscores a broader call from Malawi’s faith community for greater responsibility in public commentary, particularly on sensitive issues involving national leadership and personal well-being. The interfaith body urged citizens across all political affiliations to exercise caution and restraint, warning that unverified claims undermine national stability as well as basic standards of human dignity and respect.

To date, neither Sylvester Namiwa nor CDEDI has issued an official response to the interfaith body’s condemnation.
