Flights across the Middle East and beyond are being disrupted as the U.S. and Israel conducted an attack on Iran, leading to the closure of regional airspaces and leaving thousands of travellers stranded.
Flight Disruptions in Canada and Globally
Disruptions are being felt in Canada, with Air Canada cancelling a flight to Dubai earlier Saturday, following strikes in Iran and surrounding countries including Bahrain, Qatar, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates.
Air Canada has suspended all flights to and from Dubai (DXB) until March 3, and flights to Tel Aviv (TLV) are suspended until the 8th. The airline advises passengers in either region not to go to the airport, prioritizing their safety.
Customers on affected flights are permitted to make changes without penalty, space permitting, and can retrieve their booking online to do so. Passengers who purchased tickets with Air Canada Vacations are advised to contact them directly.
The airline is actively monitoring the situation in Dubai and Tel Aviv and will provide updates on rebooking options.
Other flights departing from Canada may also experience delays due to ongoing tensions in the Gulf region.
Toronto Pearson Airport Impacted
Toronto Pearson International Airport, Canada’s largest airport, stated that some flights are being impacted Saturday. Airlines are adjusting routes and schedules, potentially leading to delays or cancellations. Passengers are advised to check their flight status directly with their airline before going to the airport.
Israel, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar also closed their airspace on Saturday, as did airspace in southern Syria. Planes en route to cities like Tel Aviv and Dubai early Saturday were diverted or returned to their departure airports.
Dubai International Airport, the world’s busiest airport for international flights, reported over 700 inbound and outbound flights cancelled. Flights were halted indefinitely at both Dubai International and Dubai World Central—Al Maktoum International Airport.
Global Affairs Canada has updated its travel advisories for Canadians travelling to and from Gulf nations, including Israel, Bahrain, Jordan, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, warning of “ongoing military activity” in the region.
