Indonesia’s government has received praise from Iran for its willingness to facilitate peace efforts in the Middle East, as tensions remain high between Iran, Israel, and the United States. Iranian Ambassador to Indonesia, Mohammad Boroujerdi, acknowledged Indonesia’s swift response in offering to mediate in the region.
Indonesia’s Role in Middle East Peace Efforts
Boroujerdi spoke at a gathering with Indonesian Islamic figures in Jakarta on Friday, stating that Indonesia’s commitment to easing tensions is an important step toward fostering lasting stability and peace in the Middle East. He also expressed appreciation for Indonesian Islamic scholar Din Syamsuddin, who attended the meeting.
Syamsuddin, head of the Center for Dialogue and Cooperation among Civilizations, has made significant contributions to promoting sustainable peace at both regional and global levels, according to Boroujerdi. The ambassador urged Muslims, particularly in Indonesia, to unite in opposing narratives supporting United States and Israeli military actions.
Boroujerdi stated that hostility associated with Zionism is not limited to Islam, adding that the Israeli government opposes not only Islamic teachings but also Christianity and Jewish groups that do not align with Zionism. He also cited restrictions imposed by Israel that prevent Muslims from praying at Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem.
Syamsuddin echoed the ambassador’s call for unity, urging Islamic organizations, the public, and the Indonesian government to respond cohesively to the situation in the Middle East. “This is not the time to dwell on our differences, whether Sunni or Shia, Arabs or Persians. We are fellow Muslims taught by our religion to uphold brotherhood,” he said.
Indonesia’s Red Cross is also weighing the possibility of providing medical aid to Iran, and President Prabowo Subianto recently expressed condolences to Iran over the death of Khamenei.
