Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin defended British Labour leader Keir Starmer during a meeting with former U.S. President Donald Trump, according to reports from the Oval Office. Martin also addressed Trump’s views on immigration in Europe.
Martin Defends Starmer to Trump
Trump was reportedly critical of his NATO allies and made disparaging remarks about Starmer, stating he was “no Winston Churchill.” Martin responded by describing Starmer as an “earnest, sound person” who had “reset” the Anglo-Irish relationship and with whom Trump “had the capacity to get on with.”
The exchange occurred during a meeting in the Oval Office. Martin, the son of a boxer, reportedly “found his voice” after witnessing what he perceived as attacks on Starmer.
The two leaders met last week at the British-Irish summit in Cork, where a warm relationship between Martin and Starmer was evident.
Martin also addressed Trump’s perceptions of Europe, stating that it is “still a very good place to live,” and Trump allowed him to make his points, still hailing Martin as someone “we like.”
The 40-minute meeting highlighted the progress made in repairing relations between Britain and Ireland, even as work continues to restore the “Special Relationship.”
