Israel confirmed Monday that it struck the South Pars petrochemical facility in southern Iran, the largest such facility in the country. The strike, carried out by the Israeli Air Force, has taken the facility offline, along with another Iranian petrochemical facility responsible for 85% of Iran’s petrochemical exports.
IDF Targets Iranian Petrochemical Industry
Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that the two facilities targeted in the strikes are now out of use. The petrochemical industry is a major source of funding for Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and its military industry, Katz added.
The Israeli Air Force specifically targeted facilities used to produce materials for explosives, ballistic missiles, and other weaponry. According to the military, one of the sites is a primary location for the production of a critical component for ballistic missiles.
Israeli forces expect the strikes to disrupt the Iranian regime’s ability to manufacture various types of weapons using materials produced at the targeted facility.
