Iran launched drones and missiles toward Gulf states Wednesday evening, with blasts heard in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and missile threats intercepted in the United Arab Emirates, authorities reported.
Iran Attacks Gulf States with Drones and Missiles
Four people were injured in Riyadh when shrapnel from a ballistic missile interception fell on a residential area, according to civil defence officials.
Riyadh’s defence ministry stated it intercepted four ballistic missiles Wednesday, with a fragment landing near a refinery south of the capital. Multiple drones were also intercepted and destroyed as they targeted gas facilities in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province.
In the UAE, Abu Dhabi suspended operations at a gas facility due to falling debris from missile interceptions, the capital’s media office said Thursday. Authorities are responding to incidents at the Habshan gas facilities and the Bab oil field, though no injuries have been reported.
Qatar condemned the attacks on Iranian gas facilities, calling them “dangerous and irresponsible.” Foreign ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari warned that targeting energy infrastructure threatens global energy security, regional populations, and the environment.
The UAE also criticised the targeting of Iranian facilities as a “dangerous escalation,” stating it poses a direct threat to global energy security.
The Israeli military remained silent Wednesday evening regarding a strike on the South Pars/North Dome mega-field. When asked twice by AFP, the Israeli military did not respond.
Prior to Wednesday’s attacks, Tehran had attempted to disrupt major Gulf refineries and tighten its control over the strait, aiming to inflict economic damage. Saudi Aramco’s Ras Tanura facility and the UAE’s Ruwais refinery have been targeted in recent weeks.
Earlier in March, Iranian attacks forced QatarEnergy to halt liquefied natural gas production and declare force majeure. Energy producers in Kuwait made similar declarations, indicating potential export target disruptions.
