Former President Donald Trump said Sunday he has agreed to speak with Iranian leaders, while noting that much of the country’s leadership has been killed amid ongoing conflict between U.S. and Israeli forces and Iran.
Trump to Talk with Iranian Leaders
“They want to talk, and I have agreed to talk, so I will be talking to them. They should have done it sooner,” Trump said, according to reports. He did not specify with whom he intends to speak or when those conversations might occur.
Trump indicated that many of the Iranian officials he previously engaged with are no longer in power. “Most of those people are gone,” he said. “Some of the people we were dealing with are gone, because that was a big – that was a big hit.”
He was apparently referring to a strike that resulted in the death of Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other top officials. “They should have done it sooner,” Trump added. “They could have made a deal. They should’ve done it sooner. They played too cute.”
In Iran, President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that a leadership council, comprised of himself, the judiciary head, and a member of the powerful Guardians Council, has temporarily assumed the duties of supreme leader following Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s death.
