Iran Threatens War, Labels EU Forces “Terrorists”

The U.S. Navy has increased its presence in the region with six destroyers, one aircraft carrier, and three littoral combat ships, amid heightened tensions following Iran’s suppression of protests and a potential for negotiations between Washington and Tehran.

Iran Protests and U.S. Response

Former President Trump reportedly considered options against Iran, including targeted strikes on security forces. This consideration came after a deadly crackdown on nationwide protests against Iranian leadership that began in January.

On Saturday, Trump stated that Iran was “seriously talking” with Washington, following comments from Tehran’s top security official, Ali Larijani, who said on X that arrangements for negotiations were underway.

Trump also expressed hope for a “negotiated deal that would be satisfactory with no nuclear weapons.” Tehran has indicated its willingness to engage in “fair” negotiations, but maintains it will not compromise its defensive capabilities.

Protest Fallout and EU Designation

The protests, initially sparked by economic hardships, evolved into the most significant political challenge to the Islamic Republic since its 1979 establishment. While official figures report 3,117 deaths related to the unrest, the US-based HRANA rights group has verified 6,713 deaths as of Sunday. These numbers remain unverified by Reuters.

In response to the crackdown, the European Union designated the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) as a terrorist organization on Thursday.

Iranian Retaliation

Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf announced Sunday that EU armies would also be designated as terrorist organizations, and authorities would consider expelling EU states’ military attachés.

Qalibaf stated, “By trying to hit the Revolutionary Guards … the Europeans actually shot themselves in the foot.” Lawmakers subsequently chanted “Death to America, Shame on you Europe” while wearing IRGC uniforms in support of the elite force.
